Delia A Haynes

Delia Haynes is a professor in the Department of Chemistry & Polymer Science at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Her research is in the field crystal engineering, which uses well-understood intermolecular interactions to assemble molecules in a particular arrangement in the solid state, with a view to designing novel molecule-based functional materials. Haynes studies multi-component crystals, with an emphasis on unconventional crystallisation methods. Delia completed her PhD at Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge, and remained at Cambridge as a postdoctoral researcher with the Pfizer Institute for Pharmaceutical Materials Science. She has been at Stellenbosch University since 2007. Delia was recently elected the first president of the African Crystallographic Association. She is also a member of the European Crystallographic Association Executive Committee, a member of the CrystEngComm and NJC Advisory Boards, and a fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
